Samuel George Darling, 77 - died at his home in Gloversville, New York on Friday June 17, 2005. He was born in Edinburg on August 13, 1927, the son of Samuel John Darling and Eliza Jane Snow Darling. He was a retired leather worker, house painter, and popular musician, playing in several bands including the Western Aces. He also performed as a solo organist formany years, appearing at various restaurants, pubs and clubs throughout the area. He was of Protestant faith. He served in the US Navy and was stationed at Shanghai, China during World War II. He was a member of the Gloversville VFW (Post 2077) and the GloversvilleAmerican Legion (Post 137). He was also a post member of the Gloversville Moose, Foresters, and the Bleecker Fish and Game Club.Mr. Darling's mother was a school teacher in Edinburg, and his father was an artist, cartoonist, house painter, and glove worker, and played the piano at the Darling Theatre in Gloversville before electronic sound became available. His father taught his son how to play thepiano and by the age of 13, his son was playing for occasions. Sam Darling performed at many venues accompanied by a vocalist named Mary Thomas of Johnstown.He is predeceased by siblings Ralph Darling of Broadalbin, Melba Bellen of Mayfield, Leona Gardinier of Northville, and Robert Darling of Mayfield. Survivors include two nieces, Carol Darling of Johnstown and Sandy Orr of Wells, and their families, and his daughter, Dr.Eliza Jane Darling, anthropologist, of Bristol, England.A funeral service will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Northville on Wednesday, June 29, at 10am. Reverend RW Williams will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville VFW or Gloversville American Legion.
