Margaret "Marge" A. Collier
May 22, 1927 - February 6, 2015
Margaret A. “Marge” Collier, age 87, of Gloversville, NY entered eternal rest peacefully on February 6, 2015 at home with her loving family at her side. She was born on May 22, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Joseph and Janet Stevenson Tiernan. She moved to Gloversville in late 1950 and lived here until she moved to Whiting, NJ in 1994. She returned to Gloversville in 2011. Margaret was married 47 years to the late John F. Collier who predeceased her on September 14, 1993. In addition to being a loving wife and faithful mother of seven children, she worked in Gloversville for many years as a ward clerk at Nathan Littauer Hospital; assistant manager of The Candle Shop; and she and her husband made wooden crafts and managed the “Wood ‘N Things” gift shop for ten years. Mrs. Collier served as a volunteer in many community organizations and civic associations, including the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts; Mayfield Central School PTA, including service as President of the PTA; the American Heart Association and The Community Chest, predecessor to United Way; the Foresters and the Moose Clubs. Mrs. Collier was one of many local supporters who petitioned in the early 1960’s for signatures of support for a local community college which contributed to the establishment of Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Johnstown, NY. She was proud that six of her seven children either graduated from or took courses at F-MCC and the seventh graduated from another NYS community college. Following the death of her husband, Margaret moved to Whiting, NJ where she lived for almost 17 years. While in NJ she was trained and worked as a home health aide for many years. She was very active in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church as a communicant and volunteer. She was instrumental in initiating the Divine Mercy Devotion, served as a Eucharistic Minister, was an active volunteer of the Lazarus Group, Helping Hands Ministry, and served as a Bereavement Support Group counselor. Upon returning to Gloversville in 2011 she became a communicant at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Survivors include her seven loving children, fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: John Collier (Monika, predeceased) of Colorado Springs, CO and his children David (Jessica) and son Augustus, Eric (Marnie) and Ashley; Janet Hoose (John) of Gloversville; Gail Ryan (Jerry) of Monroe, LA; Sue Pappas of Lowville, NY and her sons Andrew (Elizabeth) and Anthony ; Tim Collier (Melissa) of Gloversville and his children Derrick and Travis; Beth Brown of Johnstown, NY and her children Christopher, Michael and his son Connor, and Ryan; Gwen DeForte (Jimmy) of Pennington, NJ and their children Jenna, Samantha, Trevor, Alexander, and Kilee Rose. Mrs. Collier is also survived by her sister Betty Galvin (Eugene) of Woodstock, VA. Her other three siblings and their spouses all predeceased her: Joseph Tiernan; Gerard Tiernan (Helen); and Agnes Ziegler (Jim). She has many, many nieces and nephews from her own siblings and from ten of her husband’s eleven siblings who loved her dearly. Her cousin, Andrew McKinlay and his wife Olwen of Worcester, UK were very dear to her as well. In addition to family members, Margaret was loved and respected by many friends and all she came into contact with whether as a neighbor, volunteer, church member or in many other capacities throughout her long and productive life. Friends may call on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Gloversville Funeral Service, 4 Second Avenue from 4 pm to 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 13, 2015 at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 149 South Main Street, Gloversville at 10 a m. Burial will follow immediately after Mass at Prospect Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine Building fund (Auriesville Shrine), 136 Shrine Road, Fultonville, NY 12072; Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville; Fulton-Montgomery Community College Scholarship Fund, 2805 State Highway 67, Johnstown, NY 12095; or the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting, NJ.
