Mr. Lawrence W. Hogan
January 16, 1929 - July 1, 2016
Lawrence W. Hogan Jr., 87, of Edinburgh, NY passed away peacefully on July 1, 2016 following a brief illness. He died surrounded by his loving family at his home on the Great Sacandaga Lake. Born in Warren, PA on January 16, 1929, he was the son of the late Lawrence W. and Mary Gallagher Hogan. He grew up in Red Hook, NY, where he graduated from Red Hook Central School in 1947 as the Senior Class Vice President. A musician and athlete, he played the trumpet as part of marching and swing bands. For much of his years he was a member of the football team, glee club, news staff and play committee. Lawrence was a Veteran of the Korean War and United States Army, where he trained in the Radio School for Electronics of the 24th Signal Corps. After being honorably discharged in 1953, he was employed by IBM, Poughkeepsie, NY. During his 37 year career, Larry was awarded for outstanding contributions to the NASA Space Program, the Automated Manufacturing and Robotics Development Program, and his contributions to World Trade IBM in Italy, Germany and France. He retired as the Poughkeepsie Manufacturing Superintendent on March 9, 1990. Lawrence had been an avid enthusiast of any nautical activity or aviation, He loved the outdoors for cross country skiing, water sports, camping and fishing. He took special delight in spending time with his granddaughters, was a great supporter of music and the arts, and continued to play the trumpet in his final years. As a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Northville, NY, Larry sang in the choir until 2010. Larry was an active member of the Sacandaga Seniors Club and an avid supporter of the Old Rhinebeck Airdrome. Lawrence married Mary Catherine Curran in February 13,1954. Her death preceded him in May 2013. He is survived by his five children, Edward Hogan of Elizabeth City, NC, Joseph Hogan of Ft. Myers, FL, Eileen Hogan of Chapel Hill, NC, Sheila Hogan of Raleigh, NC and Monica Hogan of Piney Grove, NC. He is also survived by beloved his granddaughters, Shaelee Hogan of Pawling, NY, Caroline Iantosca and Hillary Iantosca of Chapel Hill, NC, Caitlin Forrest of Raleigh, NC and his brother James Hogan of Red Hook, NY. Many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Northville Funeral Service, Inc., 401 Bridge Street, Northville NY 12134 from 4pm until 7pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 9. 2016 at 11am at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Northville with Fr. Jun Segura as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in support of the preservation of antique aviation, one of Lawrence’s beloved destinations and favorite pastimes.
