Elizabeth "Betty" Gugenberger

September 11, 1925 - January 22, 2022

Elizabeth “Betty” Gugenberger 96, loving mother of six, and adoring wife of Albert R. Gugenberger, left her earthly life to join her beloved heavenly family on January 22, 2022. Betty was born on September 11, 1925, the daughter of Frederick and Hattie (Henderson) Graves, she was the youngest of five children, residing in the Town of Bleecker; later moving to Gloversville, where Betty attended the Gloversville School System. Betty met the love of her life, her husband Albert, they married on December 23, 1944, moving to St. Louis where he was serving in the US Army. The couple moved back to New York, briefly residing in Northville until they eventually purchased a two-family home in Gloversville with Elwin and Shirley Gugenberger, where they raised their two families as one. Betty is survived by her children; Richard Gugenberger (Charlene), Daniel Gugenberger (Barb), Judy Elmendorf (Michael) Jill Bell (Terry) Jan Ackerknecht (Eric) and 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to honor and thank Betty’s close friend and caregiver Debbie Lobdell-Cook who was by her side daily offering comfort, care and friendship. A dedicated employee of J.J. Newberry 5 & 10, General Electric, The Sweetheart Shop, The Idle Hour Restaurant and Nathan Littauer Hospital until her retirement in 1987; Betty imparted a strong work ethic, serving as a paragon of virtue for her children. As Betty believed it was important to be active, she served as President of the Kingsboro Towers Tenants Association, she was active in the Gloversville Senior Center, she was an avid traveler visiting Florida, Texas, Hawaii, Germany and was often found enjoying the amenities of the casinos of Saratoga. Betty relished the love, admiration and devotion she shared with Albert as they watched their family grow and prosper. The family affectionately remembers the wonderful holidays together, and the love and commitment demonstrated during their parents 57 years together. The family fondly reflects upon how Betty appeared happiest when her and Albert would glide across the dance floor waltzing to their favorite melody. Betty’s life was not without trauma, Betty demonstrated her determination as she persevered through illness and personal loss, as she was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband Albert, Son Robert Gugenberger and great grandson Christopher Insogna. Although diminutive in stature, Betty was a strong matriarch, a living example of tenacity, resolve and determination. Betty lived life to its fullest, proudly savoring the time she shared with the family she treasured so much. Betty you will be greatly missed by your worldly family, but we know that we cannot have you and we are happy knowing that Dad, Robert, Christopher and the other angels have you back. Goodbye to a beautiful woman, a wonderful mother and loving grandmother. Dance on Betty, dance on. A graveside service and interment for Betty will be conducted by the Gloversville Funeral Home on June 13, 2022 at 11:00am with a Celebration of Life to follow. Donations in memory of Betty may be made to: The Gloversville Senior Citizen Center, 53 Church Street, Gloversville NY.
